LANSING, Roger Stewart

“Our lives take us on journeys born of the heart.” And what a journey it was! Let’s gather, as family and friends, to honour and remember a life well-lived; a man who holds a very special place in our hearts.

Roger died so peacefully in his home on Saturday, April 19th, 2014, holding the hands of his children and grandchildren. Born on the 9th Concession of Colchester on a cold March night, kept warm on the door of a wood stove oven, Roger’s life began. He spent his early life in Essex with his mother, Violet, his father, Edward, his older brother Morley, and his faithful dog Prince.

At age 18, he enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces to serve his country during WWII in England, on the beaches of Normandy and across the European continent, culminating in the liberation of Holland. He returned home to marry his high school sweetheart, Gloria May McPherson, and began his family life – the treasured father of Cynthia Postons (and “JP”) and John, and the much adored grandpa of Nancy and Jamie Stewart (and Rachel). Roger owned and operated Lansing Hardware, in Essex, and later worked as an industrial salesman in Windsor and Essex County.

After breaking the Ontario pole-vaulting record as a W.O.S.S.A. track and field champion at age 16, he later mastered the Black Diamond slopes of Whistler Mountain, as a first time skier, in his 65th year! Following the death of his wife, Gloria, Roger retraced his steps in 1995 with his son and brother to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Holland – a highlight in his life.

The wonderful care Roger received from the staff of Leamington Memorial Hospital, the CCAC homecare team – and especially by Dr. Jessica Laba - will always be remembered by his family.

We invite you to join us for a celebration of our dad, grandpa, friend and true hero! Family and friends will be received at the VICTORIA GREENLAWN FUNERAL HOME, 1525 Hwy 3, Oldcastle (519-969-3939) on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 from 7-9 p.m. and on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 from 10 a.m. until the time of Funeral Service in the Chapel at 11 a.m. Bishop Jack Peck officiating. Cremation to follow.

In kindness, memorial donations made to the Windsor Essex County ALS Society (c/o Sharon Colman, 1426 Front Rd. S., Amherstburg, ON N9V 2M6) would be appreciated.

You may leave your condolences online at www.msuttonfuneral.ca
